With the humble start of the business called SAB Bakhshi & Co., the company was established in 1892 in Kanpur, U.P, India, by Shaikh Shafi Ahmed dealing in various merchandise items and household medicines.

The firm moved to Calcutta, West Bengal (now Kolkata) in the year 1900 and started functioning from its office at 127 Holiday St. (now known as Chittaranjan Ave.) - just next to the Fire Brigade Station. It used to distribute publicity materials and brochures called the “Bakhshi Jantari” free of cost in huge quantities. Meanwhile, there were many new formulations such as medicines for stomach troubles, general health tonics, hair oil, cough mixtures, and medicines for eye diseases introduced by Shaikh Shafi Ahmed who was a Unani medical practitioner (Hakeem) himself and Bakhshi Company's business was expanded. Numerable general items of consumer goods were added such as imitation jewelry, make-up kits, pens, pencils, toys, and games, musical instruments, children's bicycles and tricycles, ladies and mens dresses and shoes, etc. However, the main focus was on marketing it's own "BAKHSHI" brand watches and all clocks which were functional.
